It's that time of the year when the horses get realy bored and seek to entertain themselves by chewing on the barn. I've been thinking of getting one of those molasses licks that come in the plastic tub. Money is a bit tight for us right now, so they seem a bit expensive at around $60-$80. We've got four horses. How long do they last? _________________ Sarah Rose

Sarah, have you tried dragging downed trees/logs into their lot? gives them something to chew on...they prefer that over barn wood , hopefully!

They are turned out on 3 acres of meadow and creek bottom, so they have plenty of bushes and stuff. I guess if we didn't have those our barn would be the target a lot more. _________________ Sarah Rose

| We bought one of those a couple of months ago for 2 horses that are out on pasture and getting grained and hay dailey. According to the literature they were supposed to last close to 2 months. Ha ha. Our horses didn't lick the thing they stood there taking huge chunks at a time. It didn't last but a little over a week. So back to the feed store and they said we had it too close to the water supply and to move it further away so they had to walk to get it. This one lasted about 2 weeks. Oh they look good but we can buy alot of grain for what they cost. Maybe our horses are just pigs but they didn't work for us. |

Your horses will really eat the first one fast. Once they Balance out the minerals in their body, they slow down the consumption. I usually go through a couple each winter. And the 200lb yellow tubs last around 4 weeks for my 4 horses. Shop around, Seems like I can find them for mid $50, but it all depends on what the store wants to mark things up. I have not bought any this winter, so maybe they have gone up.
My horses get Hay, No grain. So the tubs add a source of other minerals and vitamens. I'm not too big on the molasses part of the tub. But I haven't found a resonable mineral tub that doesn't have it.
The nice side, I save the old tubs and take them on camp trips and feed the horses out of the tubs. |
